SuperSize Me

Last night Phil and I watched "SuperSize Me", the film about Fast Food and how its making America (and the world) fat. While I have to agree that it is the culprit behind much of America's battle with pudge, I also think that any reasonable person understands what does and does not make you fat. I certainly know and I just so happen to be fat*.

Before we started watching, I knew that it would change my view of fast food. Not that I think its good for me. On the contrary, I know its very bad. But, I don't think I knew to the extent HOW bad it was. Its downright suicide. Absolutely disgusting.

Am I going to sue McDonald's anytime soon? Certainly not. Not until a clown in a yellow and red suit comes to my home and demands that I eat a Big Mac with a gun to my head. Until then, it has been all my choice to balloon to the size I am at now. It is also my choice to do or not do something about it.

One last comment and I am done. In this movie, one of his experts speaks of the social acceptance of attacking a smoker for choosing to smoke. He goes on to say that just by society's standards, its not ok to tell a fat person that they shouldn't be eating fast food or getting dessert, but its ok to berate a smoker for something similar. I have to disagree with the comparison of the two. A smoker is choosing to do a recreational activity that isn't something to body needs to live. A fat person is eating too much and causing themselves harm. The smoker can stop smoking, walk away and never pick up another cigarette. The fat person must continue to eat. There is no escaping food. This was a ridiculous example for this man to make.

I would recommend this movie just for the information alone about the health risks of eating this kind of diet and the statistics of how quickly our society will grow in obesity over the next 10 years. Its simply unbelievable.

*note: I do not say this to self-deprecate, I say this because I am more than 100 lbs over what is considered my ideal weight. Therefore, I am not only fat, but morbidly obese by any medical standards.

By blog buddy Whiz Gidget has a pretty good post about this movie as well. The link is on my blog if you want to check it out.

I haven't sworn off fast food but it sure makes you wonder!

The part that I have seen already is disturbing at best and I started watching it as someone who is already jaded and disgusted with the industry.
